Two new grains & an ugly confession!

Lets talk about the ugly part first. I have something to confess (not food related), I am a bad person, a bad friend. What made me think so? One of my best friend in the program won a prize (that I didn't participate) and I felt a little bit of jealousy instead of being happy for him. From one hand, I think it's human nature to feel jealousy (especially when someone close to you gets something good. I know I wouldn't feel the same if another person in the program won), from the other hand, I should be happy for him because he's my friend. The jealousy feeling only lasted few moments but the unpleasant guilty feeling about feeling jealousy keeps bothering me. It makes me feel I'm so obscure, so bad friend, so bad person. :(

Okay. now let's move to the pretty part. I tried two new grains!!! Quinoa and Spelt.
Breakfast combo
  • 1/3 c. quinoa
  • 1/2 c. almond breeze chocolate
  • 1/2 chopped apple
  • 2 tbsp pumpkin
  • vanilla/cinnamon
  • Coconut spread (from Krista)
It was a really interesting texture and flavor, fluffy, creamy, nutty and slightly crunchy texture. Some from info from WHFoods website:
Most commonly considered a grain, it is actually a relative of leafy green vegetables like spinach and Swiss chard. It is high in protein, but the protein it supplies is complete protein, meaning that it includes all nine essential amino acids. Because quinoa is a very good source of manganese as well as a good source of magnesium, iron, copper and phosphorus, this "grain" may be especially valuable for persons with migraine headaches, diabetes and atherosclerosis.
And the coconut spread is sooooo good.... perfect to add to this bowl because it's not sweetened and the nutty flavor was a little strong.
I got the book I ordered last week about Diabetes II, I hope I can learn a lot from it.
I had to go to campus in the morning and spend whole day there, so I packed this for snack (treats from Annie)No lunch pic because I had it with a visiting scholar, a professor and 3 students more. I had a Greek salad with greens, feta, walnuts and grapes. It was good, but I guess you can't really enjoy a meal when it's a "work" meal.
I came back home, bothered by the reason I mentioned above and starving! So I first had this lovely combo: strawberries, kamut puffs and almond milkAfter that gigantic bowl, I was still hungry, so I went to 1/2 muffin with LCI didn't feel like working out, not even yoga, so I had plenty of time to prepare a good dinner. Here it comes the second new grain: Spelt. It looks and tastes very similar to wheat berries. I made a pilaf with chicken broth, onions and green peasLove its chewy texture.
Also I made a variation of Maggie's sauteed squid. I used frozen octopus instead, omit the fish sauce because I didn't have it, replace sesame oil by canola oil + sesame seeds (because I didn't have sesame oil), and used onions instead of leeks which I also didn't have. The end result was amazingly good, so tasty!!!And 1/4 of baked kabocha. If you don't know what it is, Maggie just wrote a post about it.I was a delicious meal~ I enjoyed so much!!!
Dessert: another 1/4 of baked kabocha with cinnamonQuestion (related to the first part): Have you ever felt jealous about your close friends?

Funny, I was almost going to have quinoa for breakfast today too! In the end my lack of time to go buy it won out.

As for jealousy towards a friend: of course, we all do. As long as you're happy mixed in with jealousy, and you don't let it show, I think its fine. It's really only bad if it manifests itself in your behaviour in any way: both because you'll be ruining your friends moment, and because then you're letting that negative feeling become a negative action!

Hey coco

Great new grains! I've only ever used spelt in baking, but never in food. And I've never had quinoa. I might have to give them a try.

In terms of the first part of your post - I wouldn't worry too much about it. I always get a little jealous of my friends! They are all very successful, smart and wonderful law student! And they achieve lots of great things (prizes in various subjects, acceptance to fancy uni's for postgrad studies, really prestigious jobs etc). I still love them, and I would never wish that they weren't able to achieve their successes... It's just a natural reaction I generally feel at first (and most of the time it goes away).

I think it comes down to your personality, really. If you're a perfectionist and try hard to achieve things in life, I think you are more likely to feel like this. It doesn't make you are a bad person. It just means you expect a lot from yourself and are a high-achiever. I agree with Manda - if it manifests into action, then maybe it is a problem. But it doesn't sound like that at all with you. Stop being so hard on yourself! You're a great girl :-) I bet this friend of yours can't whip up a breakfast that looks nearly as delectable as yours!

Hmmm...I love wheat berries so I think I'll have to try the spelt berries now!

I think it's only natural to feel jealous every now and again. I wouldn't condiser yourself a bad friend at all.

I think it's natural to feel jealous...but it's what you do with those feelings that makes a difference. By choosing not to make a big deal of the way you feel and by acting excited with your friend, you are making the right choices. :-)I definitely don't think you are a "bad" person. It's human nature to want to be better than everyone else, but we have to continually fight it.

lovely new grains! I think I particularly like the spelt. will have to try that sometime!
I saw Maggie's post on kabocha, too! I think all grocery stores should stock up high on them, don't you think?
Coco, don't be guilty over feeling a bit jealous. if you felt no jealousy at all, you're not even a human being. it's absolutely NATURAL to feel a bit jealous, as long as you don't let it bring you down and obsess over it. but it seems like you waved it away, but only to let guilt set in! don't be too tough on yourself, girl! nobody's a saint!

Don't feel bad -- jealous is a normal feeling we can't help sometimes. I think the fact you feel guilty makes you a good friend as it shows how much you care about the person. Quinoa for breakfast...I need to try that!

I get jealous often, but I don't let it take over my mind..you know? Anyway, I did add some peanut butter to the pudding, but I like the banana suggestion, a lot. Adds some more nutrition too!

aww coco, don't feel bad - i think those are normal feelings - i think it means that you're a good friend if you recognized the jealousy and then felt guilty about it.. *hugs*

wow i have never tried to make a dish with squid/octopus/any sea creature with 8 legs. you inspire me! and thanks for the quinoa reminder.. i havent had any in ages.

i do not get jealous per say, sometimes a bit envious at times, but then i put myself in check by reminding myself that i probably have things that they are in turn envious of, and it all works out.

way to humble yourself though, by posting this, don't feel too bad about it :)

I think it's really hard not to be jealous, but as long as you realize that, you're doing okay. I do get jealous too, but I'm working on it!

Yay you tried my recipe :) Your 2 new grains look awesome. I've had quinoa before but I've been meaning to try it for breakfast. Also - I just bought octopus (frozen) so I'll be trying that out this week.

Dinner and dessert - best things ever. Yay for kabocha!

There's nothing wrong with feeling jealous for a few moments, it's completely natural.

Great grains!! I love quinoa, but haven't tried it for breakfast - brilliant idea! The spelt really does look like wheat berries - I've gotta try these too. Spelt flour is wonderful in pancakes & baked goods.

MM spelt looks great! How adventerous of you :)

We all get jealous, it's human nature! But as long as we don't dwell on that jealousy or let it affect a friendship, then I think that it's generally harmless.

These blueberries are HUGE, which is why I like them I think. They are a bit sweeter than the ones I sometimes buy at Trader Joe's, yet they have the same calories, it's strange. They are from Kroger, and they ar eonly 4 dollars for 12 ounces, which really isn't too bad!
I'm going to try Tempeh fries (Someone suggested them), I will let you know how they turn out.

I just read this. Are you kidding? Being jealous doesn't make you a bad person or friend! I feel jealousy when people get recognition that I want - it's really natural and our programs BREED those feelings girl! You're a wonderful person with a beautiful, sensitive spirit and we're lucky to have you :)

oh hun, jealousy isn't the nicest of emotions, but so human and so common!! i understand that you feel bad about it - i feel easily jealous of certain things too and feel guilty - but honestly, it is so natural. and just remember, while you are feeling bad about your own jealousy, there is most likely someone out there feeling jealous of YOU!!
